Searching For Suitable Turntable Needles

By Richard Russell

A large number of people still play vinyl records and will own a record player to play them on. Due to the fact that most people now use mp3 or compact discs the spares for older equipment may be hard to find. If you need to find turntable needles there are a few places where you will find what you require and a little research should be done.

The stylus on a record deck is a crucial component as it is the physical link between the disc and the equipment. If your needle has become damaged or worn it will need replacing to produce a good sound and to prevent damage to your record collection. There are thousands of different types of stylus and it is essential that you fit the correct type.

The best place to find what you are looking for is to visit a specialist dealer in your neighborhood. Many of the retailers will have large stocks of needles for currently made record decks and some older or obsolete models. If they can not supply you with a suitable match they can often order one for you from a manufacturer.

Buying from a web based retailer is also a popular choice and there are many suppliers who now trade online. When ordering, you will need a maker and a serial number to search through the pages of listings. If you do not have any information, some sites will find you a match if you send in a picture of your old stylus. You should bear in mind that if you buy from a web seller you will need to pay carriage costs for your purchases.

Web based auction sites can also produce some good results and you may find rare items listed for sale. The listings will usually feature a detailed picture to allow you to make some comparisons. If you are buying a rare or expensive stylus it can be worth speaking with the seller before bidding on an item.

A good place to search for hard to find items is in local junk stores and charity shops. Many of these stores will have old audio equipment tucked away and they may have exactly what you are looking for. If you find a needle there that is suitable it is worth buying the complete piece of equipment to use for spares in the future.

When you have to replace a needle it is advisable to use a factory original if possible. In some cases your maker will still be in business and you can buy directly from them to ensure you are getting a correct match. If they are unable to supply you, they may still point you in the right direction, and assist you with your search.

When you have located a supplier that has what you need it is advisable to buy more than one needle if possible. Every stylus will eventually wear out and if you have spares in stock it will save you searching again when you need a new one. If you do not fit a new stylus straight away it should be stored safely in a box to prevent any damage.
